August is National Breastfeeding Awareness month, and I'm happy to share with you a bit of my personal story successfully breastfeeding all three of my children.  I'm hoping you can find it helpful, and to further help you with your breastfeeding experience and journey I also have a giveaway for your chance to win a great breastfeeding essentials prize pack from Philips Avent.  Philip Avent offers parents with the products and resources necessary to achieve the best Nouring Moments their little ones.  I have the greatest items to share with you, from bottles to milk storage bags, and even a super comfort proven electric pump!  These are all items I wish I had when I first started, so I'm excited for you to have a chance to win!

When I had my first son, eight years ago I knew I wanted to exclusively breastfeed, I was determined from the beginning but it came with lots of painful challenges .  It just seemed like it was what I had to do, what I was supposed to do, and there wasn't much question about it.  What I didn't know was how incredibly challenging it really was going to be.  You picture the experience to be like the angelic pictures of baby cradled in mommy's arms, as she smiles lovingly at the baby while nursing, but it wasn't that way for me for a while.  I'm not sharing that to discourage you, but actually sharing with the opposite in mind.  Besides going through labor all naturally, it was the most challenging time for me as a first time mom but also the best mom decision I've ever made.

The most challenging things in life, bring the most rewards in most cases, and when it comes to breastfeeding - it absolutely applies.  I had a hard time with baby latching on, partially because the nurses at the hospital gave him a formula bottle with a tiny nipple with a heavy flow and nothing like it is for when I child is breastfeeding.  It taught him how to feed wrong, adding to the trouble of learning how to feed properly.  It was all about the right latch, my skin getting used to the process, and the healing process of sore nipples.  TMI..but hey, at one point my nipples looked like they were falling off, they were sore to the touch and in unbelievable pain.  If you are going through this, you can get passed this, and it will all be worth it.  It does get better.  The Philips Avent Thermogel pads for dual use – warm to stimulate breast milk flow or use cold for soothing and relief will help!

If I had a good breast pump like the Philips Avent Comfort Breast Pump back then it would have helped in the healing process so much so I can give my skin a break from baby, and let it heal.  It's features are uniquely geared towards comfort, and it is also compact enough to take on the go.  I remember having a hand held manual one, that was not comfortable and a bit of a mess to use, I have memories struggling with it when I went back to work for a short time after my son was born.  The right breast pump is essential, specially for first time moms, and even those that are planning to stay at home.  Sometimes your skin needs a break, or you might need the extra stored milk.  The pump has innovative massaging petals and the soft breast cushion mimic baby's natural suckling to help simulate letdown and milk flow.  The unique design features short flanges, so mom can sit upright in a relaxed position.

Everybody's experience breastfeeding is different, and it was all totally different for me with all three of my children.  It got a whole lot easier each time, by my third child, there was no comparison in pain and learning.  This is just my personal experience, and my total win story since I didn't give up.  Getting passed the challenges in the beginning, believing in your body - trusting your body is important.  In the end both mom and baby benefits from it in so many ways.
breast to bottle bottle
Educating yourself is important, I had learned of the many products and resources by the time I had my second child.  If the nurses had given my son a bottle like the Philips Avent Natural Bottle, it wouldn't have caused so much confusion for him - giving us both a more nourishing experience.  If you have the need to use a bottle to take a break, or you pump and feed from a bottle, choose one that gives baby an easier transition from breast to bottle.  The Philips Avent Natural Bottle has a wide, breast-shaped nipple that makes it easy for baby to latch-on, and has unique comfort petals inside the nipple that increase softness and flexibility without collapse.  The bottle also has an advanced anti-colic system with innovative twin valve that allows air into the bottle.

When the soreness goes away, and you are able to put on a bra and shirt, you will leak.  The movies don't lie, but The Philips Avent Breastfeeding Essentials Set that includes the Breast Pads for absorption and comfort both day and night will keep you from the embarrassment and discomfort.  And yes, the soreness does go away, the hard times end, and it all turns into that beautiful image we all have when it comes to breastfeeding.  You'll be cradling your baby in your arms, smiling down, gently stroking their little head - and enjoying the incredible MOMents in no time.
